Staff Engineer- Backend, Graph & Cloud-Native Systems Architect

Aalborg · Full-time
Reports to: Engineering Leadership / Head of Engineering

MapsPeople is entering a pivotal phase of AI-led transformation and growth, evolving our indoor mapping platform into a modern, event-driven, cloud-native architecture. As we scale our platform and operationalise machine learning in production, we are looking for a senior technical leader to own and drive the architectural direction of our backend and platform systems.

This role plays a central part in shaping how MapsPeople’s platform evolves, scales, and supports increasingly complex products and customer needs.

The Role

As Lead hands on Architect- Backend, Graph & Cloud-Native Systems, you will have end-to-end responsibility for the backend and platform architecture powering the MapsIndoors platform. Working with the team you will define architectural principles, guide major technical decisions, and ensure our systems are scalable, reliable, and future-proof.

You will work closely with engineering leadership, product leaders, and senior engineers to translate business and platform strategy into a coherent technical architecture. This is a hands-on architectural leadership role with significant influence across multiple teams and initiatives.

What you will do

  • Own and evolve the overall backend and platform architecture across services, data, and infrastructure
  • Lead the transition toward a cloud-native, event-driven, and asynchronous architecture
  • Define architectural standards, patterns, and long-term technical strategy in collaboration with engineering leadership
  • Act as the technical authority for distributed systems design, scalability, resiliency, and consistency trade-offs
  • Drive architectural decisions related to graph-based data models, complex relationships, and spatial domains
  • Enable and support the production use of machine learning within the platform, working closely with ML and data teams
  • Ensure high standards for scalability, reliability, security, observability, and operational excellence
  • Provide architectural guidance, reviews, and mentorship to senior and staff engineers across teams
  • Collaborate closely with engineering managers, product leaders, and DevOps to align architecture with delivery and business goals

We imagine you come with

  • Extensive experience as a Lead Architect, Principal Engineer, or Staff Engineer in backend or platform-focused roles
  • Deep understanding of distributed systems architecture, including scaling strategies, fault tolerance, and consistency models
  • Strong experience designing event-driven, asynchronous, and message-based systems
  • Experience working with graph-based domains, complex data relationships, or spatial data models
  • Proven track record designing and operating cloud-native architectures on platforms such as Google Cloud Platform or similar
  • Strong backend engineering background, preferably within the .NET -ecosystem
  • Experience designing large-scale APIs, platform services, and system integrations
  • Solid understanding of operational concerns such as observability, reliability, cost optimisation, and security
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to explain complex architectural concepts to both technical and non-technical stakeholders

What you get

  • A key technical leadership role in a major platform and AI transformation
  • High influence over MapsPeople’s long-term backend and platform architecture
  • The opportunity to shape a modern, scalable, and data-driven platform
  • Close collaboration with experienced engineers, architects, and product leaders
  • Flexibility, autonomy, and room to make meaningful architectural impact
  • A competitive compensation package including flexitime, pension, and healthcare plans
